3 Easy Day Trips You Can Take From Fort Lauderdale

Are you looking for a fun day trip to take from Fort Lauderdale? Whether you’re a local or visiting the area, there are plenty of great spots within a few hours’ drive from Fort Lauderdale that make the perfect day trip destination. So grab your friends and get ready for an adventure! Here are three of my favorite day trips you can take from Fort Lauderdale whether you’re visiting from out of town, a snowbird, or like me….live in the area.

1. Miami Beach

A quick drive east will take you to Miami Beach—a must-see destination for any traveler in South Florida. With its white sand beaches, beautiful Art Deco architecture, and vibrant nightlife, Miami Beach is sure to please everyone in your group. Spend your morning browsing the shops on Lincoln Road Mall, then hit up one of the many beach clubs or rooftop bars for lunch with a view. Afterward, explore Ocean Drive’s colorful buildings and enjoy some ice cream while people watching on South Beach.

2. Everglades National Park

If you’re looking for something a bit more adventurous than sunning in South Beach, head south to Everglades National Park. The first national park in the US dedicated to preserving wetlands instead of mountains or forests, it is home to hundreds of species of birds as well as alligators and other wildlife. Take an airboat tour through the park for an up close and personal experience with nature. Or sign up for a guided kayak tour—it’s a great way to see the mangrove forests without disturbing the animals’ natural habitat too much.

3. Dry Tortugas National Park

Check out Dry Tortugas National Park about 70 miles offshore from Key West. This remote island chain is home to Fort Jefferson—a 19th-century military fortress that served as a prison during

Nobu Miami Beach hotel, resort in Keys named best in world

The adults-only Little Palm Resort & Spa on Little Torch Key in the Florida Keys was named one of the best 100 hotels in the world by Travel + Leisure.

The adults-only Little Palm Resort & Spa on Little Torch Key in the Florida Keys was named one of the best 100 hotels in the world by Travel + Leisure.

Two South Florida hotels are among the best hotels in the world, according to a popular travel website.

Travel + Leisure just released its 100 Best Hotels in the World list, and hotels in Miami Beach and on Little Torch Key in the Florida Keys made the cut, as well as one hotel in Palm Beach.

At No. 81 on the list, Nobu Hotel Miami Beach, designed to mimic a Japanese beach house, was praised for its luxuries. Travel + Leisure writes: “The list of world-class amenities at this David Rockwell-designed beachfront hotel is impressively long: exceptional epicurean delights, a beautiful 22,000-square-foot spa, three pools, a private marina, and luxurious penthouse-level villas.”

Little Palm Island Resort & Spa on Little Torch Key was No. 94 on the list. The adults-only resort, on a private island in the Florida Keys, “is accessible only by boat or seaplane. The 30 water-view bungalows have no TVs, encouraging tropical revelry of a more laid-back nature (think kayaking and snorkeling).”

The resort also made Condé Nast Traveler’s 2021 Hot List for its “fresh take on tropical chic.”

The only other hotel in Florida to make the Best 100 list is the White Elephant Palm Beach (No. 19), a sister property to the original resort in Nantucket. Travel + Leisure writes that the team has “added youthful energy to the destination when it opened its 32 tropical-inspired rooms in November 2020. Its restaurant Lola 41 has since become a hot

Miami Beach voters will head to the polls in August to vote on six ballot questions about real estate, residency requirements and a new park name in South Beach.

Election Day is Aug. 23 and there will be two weeks of early voting from Aug. 8 to Aug. 21 at Miami Beach City Hall and the North Shore Branch Library. There will be vote-by-mail drop boxes at the two early-voting sites. The deadline to request a vote-by-mail ballot from the Miami-Dade County Elections Department is Aug. 13 at 5 p.m.

More voter information — including a sample ballot — is available at votemiamibeach.com.

Referendum 1: Naming Alton Road park ‘Canopy Park’

The first referendum on the August ballot asks whether voters want to name a newly opened 3-acre public park in South Beach as “Canopy Park.” The park, built between Alton Road and West Avenue from Sixth to Eighth streets, was one of the public benefits promised in a development agreement for the construction of the Five Park condo tower next door. The City Commission first proposed “Sunset Park” after that name received the most votes in an online poll, but later changed their support to “Canopy Park.” It is up to voters to make the final decision and give Canopy Park a thumbs up or down.

Referendum 2: Architect on Board of Adjustment

Referendum 2 asks voters whether to require the city’s Board of Adjustment to include an architect. The board oversees applications for variances to the land development rules and appeals of administrative decisions. Currently, the appointed board is comprised of two citizen members at-large and five members
